Inspired by a personal journey and a legacy of mentorship, the Barbra Johnson's Center was founded on a simple belief: every visually impaired student deserves the tools to succeed.
As a visually impaired student in Cameroon, our founder, Bertrand Bafon, experienced firsthand the immense challenges of an educational system that lacked accessible resources. Without Braille textbooks, audio materials, or adaptive technology, keeping up in class was a constant struggle.
A pivotal moment in his journey was connecting with his mentor, Barbra Johnson. Though they were an ocean apart, Barbra, who was also visually impaired and lived in the United States, provided invaluable guidance and a vision of what was possible with the right tools. Through her mentorship, and with the incredible support of the Welty family, Bertrand was empowered to access the assistive technologies he needed to learn independently.
This experience didn't just change his life—it ignited a passion to bring the same opportunities to others in Cameroon. Driven by this new vision, Bertrand established the Barbra Johnson's Center for the Visually Impaired to create the support system he wished he had had.
To empower visually impaired students in Cameroon by providing accessible educational materials, essential digital skills training, and advocating for inclusive learning environments.
We envision a future where visual impairment is no longer a barrier to education and opportunity in Cameroon, and where every student has the independence to achieve their full potential.
Drawing on his personal experiences and technical expertise, Bertrand leads the center’s mission and personally mentors students.
With a passion for building connections, Gracious serves as the bridge between the center and the community. He works tirelessly with schools and families to raise awareness and ensure our programs reach the students who need them most.
